Abstract

Crystalline cellulose particles were investigated as a model for biodegradable microplastics. It was found that adsorption of pollutants, polycations of kaustamin and polylysine, on the particle surface significantly reduced the rate of enzymatic degradation by Aspergillus niger cellulases. This suggests that even biodegradable materials can persist longer in natural systems if coated with polyelectrolytes.
