Abstract

A loamy soil with a high salt content containing mainly sodium cations and sulfate anions has a loose topsoil and is susceptible to air and water erosion. Covering the soil with sand mulch followed by treatment with heterofunctional polysaccharide xanthan gum or non-ionic synthetic polyvinyl alcohol results in the formation of mechanically stable coatings over the sand mulch layer. Mulching saline soils with sand followed by treatment with polymers is a promising method for creating protective anti-erosion coatings.
