Abstract

Acetylene gas reacts with (het)aromatic nitriles in the KOH/DMSO/MeOH superbase composition at 90 °C for 10 min to afford 2-(het)arylpyridines in up to 36% yield. The process can be rationalized as the self-organization of two molecules of acetylene and one molecule of nitrile.
