Starting from (2R,3S)-2,3-dihydroxybutanolide, (4S,5S)-5-hydroxydecan-4-olide (l-factor) was synthesized, the latter being an autoregulator in the biosynthesis of the anthracycline antibiotic leukaemomycin.
